Hot Potato: What Was It Like Doing P90X With a Prosthetic Leg?

It was hard as hell. I was like a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest — kickin’ my own butt.

This is the face I make while working out. (Just ask Tony).

For those of you who don’t know what P90X is, it’s an extreme 90 day fitness program developed by workout guru, Tony Horton. It is made up of 12 workouts that mix cardio, weight and resistance trainingyogaplyometrics, and stretching routines.

I was in the Plyometrics Discipline video. Plyometrics’ purpose is to push your puny muscles and flabby thighs to complete the nearly impossible exercises that transform your legs into rods of steel. It’s a difficult workout to begin with. A good portion of the program involves jumping and balancing, making it extra challenging for a one-legged guy like me.

Goodbye poutine. Hello vegetables!

Diet is one of the most important parts of P90X. Tony eats one way only — clean.

I learned a lot from Tony’s personal chef, Melissa Costello, about eating well. In fact, when I needed to shed the beer and pizza pounds from the Broken Lizard Tour I followed Melissa’s vegan cleanse with great results!

Before P90X I thought I was in pretty good shape. Man oh Manischewitz, was I mistaken. We worked out 6 days a week, 90 minutes a day, for 90 days and that was just the test group. At first, I was doing the workout just to get into shape. I didn’t want to be in the video, because I was going to auditions in Hollywood and wasn’t ready to “come out” and tell the world about my leg.

In the end Tony convinced me to not only be in the video, but to to wear shorts to show off my prosthetic leg.

Tony is not preaching the life, he lives it. Every moment. What you see in the videos is what you get. He is himself at all times. Obviously, Tony is incredibly disciplined. He exercises everyday and remains extremely positive, surrounding himself with positive, like-minded people. Everyone sees and feels that he is authentic and are motivated by it.

Tony Horton’s dedication to helping others improve their lives is what makes P90X so successful. Not only has he motivated millions of people to change their lives, but he has inspired me to share my experiences in hopes of doing the same!
